I could have gone on and on with my Bordeaux list but had to stop sometime. The Bordeaux wine trade is in a bit of a muddle at the bottom end as at the £6-8 mark there is huge competition from all over the wine world and dare I say it far better value elsewhere. That being said I am rather pleased to have snaffled a final chunk of the Chateau La Tour de Biot which is soft, easy claret that has a touch of class. The other Christmas parcels I have taken on are the very good looking and smooth Chateau Rouselle, the Tour St Bonnet is good now and will improve further whereas the Chateau Lanessan is mature claret at a very good price that received good reviews from those that do that sort of thing.
Further down the list there are some lovely 2005 wines at realistic prices. These wines will develop further but will be very hard to find soon and should be purchased now. Clos de la Gaffeliere 2005 is a beautiful wine that will drink from this Christmas and for a further 8 years. After that I have listed some mature moments that grace very few humble wine merchants lists and basically hope someone out there has backed a winner or two!

Tiny productions, the world and his wife wanting them and a weak stirling have meant that prices for these wines have taken a bit of a jump. The good news is that I am one of the few wine merchants that has a red burgundy list containing mainly wines from the superlative 2005 vintage.
I have had great success with the Bourgogne Le Renard which is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir that shows itself off, comfortable in its own brilliance. (Those were the days.) Of the larger wines I think it is pay your money, take your choice and obviously stocks are limited so I apologise in advance for any disappointment.

I’m not really sure where to pitch my enthusiasm with The Rhone Valley. Cotes du Rhone still sells very well and when it is smooth and fruity like the new Petit Rhone (that is made by a very professional operation who will one day be winning many an award) the wines are very good value and popular. As soon as we break that £10 barrier I think the punters enthusiasm is waning some what. To reassure you both the Crozes Hermitage 2007 and the Heritage 1924 are superb wines that deliver all one wants in classy red wine at that level and to a certain degree out do Claret at that level.
