Sparkling Wine

This is a section that has been really soaring with the Charles Pelletier wines flying out and being used for many a party. The Simonnet-Febvre is a lovely glass of pink and looks excellent value against Champagne these days and good Prosecco is very good….bad Prosecco isn’t believe it or not!

The price gap between good quality fizz and Champagne has grown quite wide now so these really do have a far better chance.

French Country Wines

Even with the remarkably unhelpful Euro the wines from the South of France are still offering great value. Yes the prices have had to rise a little with the currency and hikes in duty that I suspect are unavoidable in this day and age but it must be said that vintages have been good and winemaking is improving across the board so they are all worth it!

The Domaine de Vedilhan Sauvignon is on special offer as I went long at the right time and for £5.95 you will find a balanced, refined Sauvignon with clean fruit and fresh acidity. The Viognier is also a delicious example with apricot and grapefruit jumping on the palate and coating the mouth with flavour. The Domaine de Saint-Lannes is worth a look as it delivers a well made and fruity wine with the Colombard grape at its zesty best.

White Burgandy

I needn’t say much about this lot as they are all pretty fabulous and I haven’t got room on the page.

Loire Valley

With the amazing popularity of  Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand and South Africa it must be remembered that the Loire Valley is where it all started and the wines of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé are sitting on a myriad different soil structures that suit the grape perfectly. If, like me, you have been told to eat more fish then this is the place to be. The Touraine Sauvignon, Domaine Gibault is a particularly fine new find that looks spectacular value alongside some Sancerre. While I was in Paris desperately trying to impress the curren Mrs Mason we found a lot of Anjou Rouge about and generally found them chilled. The Les Temps des Vignes is a delightful medium weight red that offers some fabulous value.

Spain

I think Spanish white wine could be the most improved section around. Alabarino is a grape I am very keen on and the Martin Codax has been a good seller over the last year and I get several punters who have been to Spain and returned looking out for Albarino. Try the Benito Santos it is a perfect example of the rich style with peach, green apple and white flowers. Great stuff.

Italy

There is a lot of new stuff in the Italian section and I am pleased to say that the improvement in the general winemaking is continuing. Some of these wines at the lower level are showing much finer balance and fresher fruit than they used to and I believe are starting to offer some of the finest value around. The GPG Pinot Grigio is a delicious new find at a very attractive price that makes a very good house white. Another wine to certainly take note of is the Falerio Dei Colli Ascolani which is a perfumed mouthful of flavour with nice acidity biting through and a delightful finish….great stuff.

Australia

The currency markets have affected Australia even worse than Europe with their dollar strengthening unmercifully. This has lead to price increases, however these have been tempered by the fact that Aussie wines do not appear to as popular as they once were so stock levels have remained high. The Outrider Semillon/Chardonnay is a lovely new house wine that does exactly what it says on the bottle. I love the Devil’s Corner Riesling which shows a dry and grapey quality that pleasures all the way down. For me Chardonnay gets a ridiculous bashing from many and I think The Innocent Bystander should be given a chance.

New Zealand

There is a growing band of quite affordable Sauvignon wines out there these days but boy o boy can they be a tad rough! Herringbone is a delightful effort with none of the residual sugar and savage acidity that I discovered in many of that other lot! Those of you looking for an alternative to good white burgundy should try a bottle of the elegant and creamy Craggy Range Chardonnay from my old stomping ground Cape Kidnappers near Napier.

Chile

I don’t want to under sell Chile but the wines do all speak for them selves and there is only so many times I can mention fresh sauvignon and plummy merlot!

Argentina

Unlike some Islands we know and love I am quite keen on Argentina. This is a selection worthy of far smarter lists than this but here we are. Pulenta Estate has been the discovery of the last two years for me and punters have thoroughly enjoyed both the Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon. At a recent tutored (don’t laugh) tasting I gave the Finca Los Primos Malbec out sold anything else.

South Africa

I am quite excited here which makes a change for me and South African wine! We tried the Fairview Sauvignon last night and loved the fresh grassy gooseberriness (that must be a word) that layered the palate with flavour. Another star is the South Hill that went down very well at a tasting in Essex (as if that’s anything to shout about!)
